VISUAL ART – Stanley Spencer – Carrick Hill

This is an excellent exhibition of one of England’s finest 20th century painters, bringing together works from across the country and England in a rare retrospective of colour and beauty that sits more than soundly in the grandeur of Carrick Hill.

Those interested in their sport will find the Basil Sellers Art Prize a worthwhile challenge and those looking for decent ‘art’ in sport will also be well rewarded. 3.5K

ADELAIDE FESTIVAL – The Black Rose by Trent Parke – AGSA – 4.5K

While his black and white prints are the most successful, experimentation and a mind unconstrained by precedent all help make The Black Rose the most significant photographic exhibition this town has seen in many a year and the highlight of this year’s Festival’s visual arts component. 4.5K

ADELAIDE FESTIVAL – Bill Viola – AGSA etc – 4K

Spread across three venues (and still on at the AGSA), this review of Viola’s works for the Adelaide Festival encompasses seven installations, all of which with sufficient patient viewing will entrance and enthral. 4K

ART – Parklands Art Exhibition – Artspace – Festival Theatre – 3K

The results are now on display in the Festival Centre’s Artspace and it is all worth a visit not that the quality of these finalists is uniformly great. But the variety of approaches is in and of itself intriguing.

FESTIVAL CENTRE – Creating the Character

This exhibition, curated by the Performing Arts Collection, showcases the work of Australian stage designers, such as Sue Russell, Tess Schofield, Dean Hills, Paul Morisset, Bronwyn Jones, Tony Graham and Luciana Arrighi who won an Oscar for her designs for Howard’s End.

FRINGE – Alex Frayne – In Dreams – Fisher Jeffries Foyer – 4K

Many photographers, like other visual artists, seem content or determined to be only known by one style, but Frayne constantly pushes the boundaries and this exhibition highlights his inventiveness. 4K

VISUAL ART – Ephemeral by Genevieve Brandenburg – from 19 Feb – Regal Theatre

Ephemeral is the title of the upcoming solo exhibition by Adelaide-based portrait photographer Genevieve Brandenburg. Showing at the Regal Theatre.
