It is upsetting that my favourite show of the 2013 Adelaide Fringe, in my favourite venue of this year’s festival, was discovered so close to the end of the season.

First to the venue – The Birdcage is one of the seemingly dozens of pop-up theatres around the state at the moment. Located in the fairly charmless Arcade Lane, this eclectic venue truly does appear to have literally sprung up from the ground, and given how it is tucked away inside the lane and up an endless flight of stairs makes you feel as though you are entering a secret, exclusive and whimsical club.

A perfect venue, then, for Alice in the Madhouse, the bizarre and nightmarish imagining of the ubiquitous children’s story. Presented almost impeccably by Madhouse Circus, a Victorian ensemble of young performers, this show approaches the quality of Cirque de Soleil, on the budget of the Adelaide Fringe.

Terrifying and emotive, hilarious and sexy (yes, ladies, there are some very attractive young men wearing very little in this show – I would almost recommend it on this basis alone), inventive and highly impressive, this show flawlessly combines physical comedy, dance, aerobatics and acrobatics with pathos and storytelling. Although there were a few – minor – opening night jitters apparent in the performance, these were swept up into the rhythm of things without a hitch, and the seamless storytelling was never interrupted.

Frankly, for me this show was near perfection, a true cirque macabre. And I’ve already bought my tickets to see it again. And again.

Gravity & Other Myths are a local group of alumni from Cirkidz who show audiences just what the human body is capable of. Accompanied by Elliot Zoerner on drums, the five featured performers (Lachlan Binns, Jascha Boyce, Jacob Randell, Martin Schreiber and Triton Tunis-Mitchell) throw themselves into each segment of the show with monumental energy and enthusiasm. What’s more, they look like they’re having a ball the whole time.

These guys aren’t just acrobats or gymnasts; they have a great stage presence and inject their show with a cheeky humour. In between impressive tumbles and unbelievable shows of strength, they have group challenges, reminiscent of school-yard games, at the end of which one member reigns triumphant as “best in show” or acknowledges their loss with a fun penalty. The majority of feats are carried off without a hitch, while the occasional slip up reminds you of the potential dangers of what you’re viewing and adds to the adrenaline rush.

It’s awe-inspiringly impressive to watch people who are so in control of their body. While other shows may rely on costumes, sets and tricks to create an atmosphere, the simplicity of the stage space on which this troupe works allows the talent of the performers to shine. I don’t know how many expletives escaped my mouth during the show but it would have easily been in double figures and might have gone higher had I not been rendered literally speechless the rest of the time.

By Peter Maddern

Two Irish brothers, ‘Famous’ Seamus and Sean-‘tastic’, are acrobats looking to become world famous through agility and their range of men’s personal care products. In the Bally tent at Gluttony they produce a somewhat bizarre show where buffoonery and brilliance are mixed and matched in equal portions with inspiration and incompetence.

The gap between the extremes are nearly as great as the two personalities themselves with Seamus not possessing an ounce of self-doubt and Sean constantly thrown off his game by just about everything, including some harsh words from his mother.

This is all the greatest of fun and the cramped confines of the Bally, with many past disciples in attendance, just add to the atmosphere. If not for the pretence of the brothers thing, the Lords of Strut would likely be regarded as camp as you can get. Not that it was in any way vulgar, with the cavorting gymnastics in just jocks more funny than confronting (beyond those in the front row at least) and the amusements with the Lords of Strut KY Jelly Lip Gel sailing happily over the heads of children.

If you have witnessed the slick Limbo and bizarre Candy Butchers, then for balance about circus at this year’s Fringe, these Irish siblings provide just the ointment. But when you go, be ready to groan and shout and laugh out loud for a healthy level of audience participation just makes it all seem so much better than it probably is.

By Peter Maddern

Life asked Death: “Why do people love me but hate you?” Death replied, “Because you are a beautiful lie, and I am the painful truth”. A suitable follow up question for the program may well have then been – why do we relish images of both in at least equal proportion?

Erth’s puppets, guided by a middle aged human narrator, directed by Scott Wright and accompanied by songs from Murder Ballads by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds examines these issues in a dark, often violently confronting production at the Queens Theatre.

Our narrator is a somewhat sad loner who craves human interaction but seems only able to solve his lusts in violent spasms. The puppets that variously inhabit his life are sized from small (some as children) to adult and life size, some with erased, blank faces, others with smiles that become grotesque as the drama plays out.

Wright’s direction of Murder is sublime with the interaction of the ballads and the action spot on (the opening song with a cowboy figure on a bed both highly funny and troubling) and his use of the various backdrops – seemingly very tall hospital screens – most effective.

At the core, audiences need to go to appreciate the message and the artistry. On the latter, the puppetry is of a very high order, with the gyrations of the prostitute (that emerges from an old battered fridge early on) all too life like. The message about the prevalence and tolerance for violence in human societies – both present and past – is hammered home in often chilling scenes, though at times it was a challenge to work out exactly what was going on.

What was also a challenge was the stifling heat of this venue. It is a sad reflection on the priorities of our civic leaders that on the day they fork over another million or two to sporting codes for their profligate largesse to their advisers, PR people and the like for the $650m Adelaide Oval, events such as this, that can put Adelaide on the map, are held in hot boxes where only a series of domestic fans are available to break up the humidity. (Then there is the unfathomable brilliance of starting construction works on the Rundle Mall, footbridge and Victoria Square on the 10 or so biggest days of the year for our town (in terms of visitors at least) but don’t get me started on that!)

To be sure, audiences need to be ready for Murder (and not just well hydrated) with its complexities, strobe lighting and the like but Erth has produced a memorable production that will reward your indulgence. But if, when you get home after you strap yourself in for some latest police drama on the box without a second thought, then you may have missed the point.

Up a flight of inconspicuous stairs lit with electric candles, down a seemingly endless prison-beige hallway resides The Birdcage, the most beautiful condemned cinema you will ever see.

Radiohead’s Creep fills the cavernous space. Pastel coloured metal folding chairs line the shallow stepped stairs, the shrieking scrapes as they are pulled out and shuffled around echo through the chamber, empty but for an enormous piece of spartan scaffolding, a bright red date-night dress dangling on a coat-hanger high high high up on the very top girder. A day bed covered in pillows sits in the middle of the otherwise empty stage and it seems far too small for something with a name like Tumble Circus for any kind of acrobatic tomfoolery…

The lights go out with a clunk and the dark is so encompassing that it seems solid and you instantly feel lost. Voices, once thick and Gaelic, the second acute and chirping; the stories of a boy from Belfast and a girl from Sweden who meet as teenagers and begin a life together as performers. The swirling mass of ghost voices snaps to the trans-continental couple screaming at each other, yelling at each other and yelling at us. They each tell half a story, two-halves that don’t so much line up like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle as they are crammed together, like odd pieces from the same puzzle, made to fit in that way that love so often does.

Thick dusty rope is scaled, and bodies dangle and twist in the air. People gasp, I gasp; the acrobatics seem so wild and dangerous, their faux-incompetence masking the thousands of hours working together, two bodies as one in perfect harmony. But we see that what cannot always work in harmony is two hearts, so passionate and emotional that they smash into each other in moments of rapture and anger, separate and all at once.

More pop music, The Breeders exploding through the space, the air electric. The pace is jarring, as sadness makes way for comedy, and the audience is literally romanced with roses and stunts. Pillows are thrown at the audience in good-humoured response to colourful audience participation and everyone wants it to just go on and on as is has been. But it must end, like all things.

An emotionally turbulent mess of hearts and bodies, Tumble Circus: This is what we do for a living is fantastic, terrifying, maddening, saddening, joyful, soulful and fucking funny. Go there, up the stairs, down the prison-beige corridor into the condemned cinema and see it, see it and then see it again, and again, and again.

Freefall is an acrobatic based show which, using sarcastic and awkward comic undertones, explores the subject of fear. From the instant the lights go up, the stage is a flurry of movement. The six performers move so quickly and so constantly that watching the show is similar to peering through a kaleidoscope, so beautiful but you simply don’t know where to look.

Winner of the Adelaide Fringe Best Circus (2010), the Tour Ready Award (2011), Melbourne Fringe Best Circus and Best Emerging Circus/Physical Theatre Performer Award (2011), Freefall is not a show to be missed. The show is put on by Gravity and Other Myths and abrogates all expectations of comic acrobatics. The show is witty but not pompous, talented but not boastful, it’s a cute, astonishing look at fear and embarrassment.

The show begins dimly lit with quiet stirring music and a recording of people discussing their greatest fear and what it truly means to be afraid. From there the performers are bestirred into a cheerful acrobatic piece which makes the first few minutes seem obfuscated. The show orbits back into the serious aspects but overall there is a powerful milieu of light heartedness. Freefall can be bifurcated into an earnest perspective of fear and embarrassment and a spectacular gymnastic show.

All of the performers mix comedy into their pieces, but the limelight is stolen by the hilarious Tilly Cobham-Hervey who hosts the evening. However she does not engage in some of the performances the others enter into so voraciously. The show ends with an apotropaic feel, after having left you are filled with nothing but cheer and excitement.

Freefall is a truly astonishing performance from some of the most talented South Australians in the business. This is a show to skip dinner with a soul mate over, one of the greatest acts at this year’s fringe.

Weaving in a mix of circus, comedy and romance, comes the whimsical story of A Circus Affair, produced by the Australian-based circus company, Circosis. A duo performance from lovable characters Mr Kiko (Andrew Cook) and Sarita (Sarah Mason), it tells the story of two aspiring performers who take on the world whilst finding that circus romance with each other.

The show is an example of silent circus with the storyline told through physical theatre. Additionally, the performers are accompanied by a projection screen providing additional videos and animations which also assisted in the storytelling process.

The video segments, which would serve as short breaks and times for costume changes for the performers, would somewhat seem less entertaining to watch on screen and would be much better received from the audience if performed live. Some slip-ups were made mid-performance (e.g. ball dropping), however both performers reacted well, incorporating it into the comedic aspects of the show which made the audience wonder whether the mistakes were done purposely as part of the routine.

Complete with highly-impressive circus acts including juggling, hoops, ball-balancing and acrobatics, the show provides great entertainment and fun for both kids and adults. The delightful pair will be sure to amaze you yet leave you laughing with a definite feel-good ending at the finale of the show.

A Circus Affair continues on for several more shows as part of the Adelaide Fringe at the Bakehouse Theatre on the 28th of Feb, and the 1st and 2nd of March.

Located at the old bus depot at 111 Franklin Street, Kids Fringe Come and Try has lots of fun activities! I took my 3-year-old niece and she had the most fun with her first Kinderchef experience. After banging on their bowls, annoying the parents and majority of the other participants, they were able to continue on with making their fruit chocolate balls. At Kinderchefs, the kids were encouraged to explore the different ingredients textures. The theme of this cooking experience was of a coconut, which Michelle encourages in all her Kinderchef courses, “to help children appreciate the food we focus on, enhancing the senses to develop a larger scoop of food.’

The second highlight for my niece was the blue tongue lizards and the frogs that the Zookeepers allowed you to touch. We even received a free child entry to the Adelaide Zoo. They also had musical instrument making and some lunch time snakes for only $5!!! Even though the rain made the turn out for this event a bit low on numbers there was so many things to participate in that it was absolutely a delightful event.

The only downfall was for the really hangover clown, although I think that the kids were totally oblivious to that type of clowning experience. There were also lots of time for interacting by painting pictures on paper, on masks and even having getting your face painted. There were so many activities programmed for the youngsters, so I am sure you will be able to spend more time exploring and finding new and exciting things every day that this event is on.

$15 dollar entry fee for kids and free for accompany adults

Each Fringe, Strut and Fret deliver a new circus type show – think Cantina, Soap – and each year they never fail to thrill and enthral. Limbo is their latest creation and while the performers don’t seem out to exceed previous troupes’ tricks, this year’s show did carry a couple of new inventions.

If anything separates this show from its forebears it is the music and musicianship. The performance opens with the four band members on the stage circle, led by a Colonel Sanders type figure, who leads the way with all manner of sound inventions and manipulations including some impressive beat boxing that has you often looking back at the band area as the hour progresses to see how it is all being done.

The increased focus on the music also means almost non-stop action even as gymnastic apparatus is carried in and out – Gen Ys be warned – you have no time to txt while this show marches on.

The displays of strength and agility are often awesome and having performers swinging over your head as they rhythmically sway to the music is something quite special. This was one of the new features along with fire tricks (which must have had the troupe’s insurance risk assessors on the edge of their seats) and a little burlesque. Sword swallowing, illusionist trickery and good old fashioned tap dancing add to the mix of an hour of wonder, joy and thrill.

To be sure Limbo is not the cheapest ticket in town but there is no risk of not getting your money’s worth – a thrill for all ages and a reason why the Garden is the centre of the Adelaide Fringe.

It’s not your usual circus! There are no flamboyant costumes, no fancy lighting and definitely no animals. But make no mistake this is a must see in 2013. With just four performers and set under the Garden’s Big Top, the audience is treated to an intimate, all-enthralling act that builds into an emotional, disconnected story of life, death, love and lust. Starting off much like a Chaplin sketch full of physical comedy and dark humour, the show rapidly grows into a frantic, industrial circus act using little more than some crates, a couple of barrels, buckets, suitcases, a bunch of hula hoops and a tonne of fairy floss.

With their quirky circus tricks and comic satire, hilarious puns and double entendres as well as the odd profanity, the Butchers remind us it is okay to laugh at the misfortunes of life, pain, loss and even death. Entangled amongst the dark humour, slapstick relief and mini burlesque show, the performers manage to find new appreciation for the physical side of circus entertainment by stripping back the effects and amazing the audience with the pure ability and artistry of their athleticism made all the more remarkable by the fact that the entire audience is within metres of the stage. There is no wonder that it won Most Outstanding Production at this year’s Melbourne Fringe.

With a strong finale of theatrical acrobatics, eerie sounds and dark emotions that creates a mood akin to a piece of H.P. Lovecraft pulp fiction, The Candy Butchers is an act that definitely speaks for itself and will bring you to your feet, whilst simultaneously leaving you to beg the question: What the hell did I just see?

Complete entertainment that runs through the entire Fringe season.
