Long held as the last true masters of country punk laden rockabilly, The Reverend Horton Heat have built a reputation as one of the most inspiring live bands of their generation, a fact not lost on Australian music lovers who’ve witnessed The Reverend tear up venues across the country making the man and his band a must see on each and every visit.

Breaking outta Dallas Texas in 1985 Jim Heath aka The Reverend Horton Heat distilled a potent brand of musical moonshine blending the finest elements of punk, country, blues and good time hillbilly rock ‘n’ roll to come up with a brew that across the span of 9 studio albums remains as fresh and intoxicating as they day it was bottled. Building a strong cult following during the ’90s through constant touring, manic showmanship, and a wicked sense of black humour, The Reverend Horton Heat shared with his contemporaries The Cramps, the role of championing this conglomeration of arcane music styles re-imagined to a point where they once again became vital and fresh.

In Adelaide The Reverend Horton Heat will be joined by heavy hitters DOUBLEBLACK, who will bring their white hot, fat backbeat proto-rockabilly to proceedings, gettin’ the rock ‘n’ roll party into high gear. Recently rounded out by former Living End drummer Travis Demsey on the kit and featuring Fireballs founding member Matt Black on guitar and Jason Skewes on the upright, DOUBLEBLACK have a proven pedigree making them one of the most powerful forces on the Australian rockabilly scene.

SOUNDSTREAM Collective – Great Music in Great Spaces – 3.5K

Last night, the Sounstream Collective, under artistic director, Gabriella Smart, delivered a little gem of a program in its latest Great Music in Great Spaces series. Focused around Victoria Square (Tarntanyangga), audience members were first dished up Stavinsky by clarinettist Peter Handsworth from the 14^th floor office of Woods Bagot, presenting below a bold view of Victoria Square, now completely cleared but for the core of the Three Rivers Fountain.

From there, we buried ourselves in the Tunnels beneath the Aldina Hotel (the old Treasury building) to hear Bach by German, Eric Soucy, on his viola. Finally the two together played in the ante room of the new Collins Bar at the Hilton Hotel.

Dashes of the old and the new, the staid and the shocking presented in a neat walking tour that explored in just two hours a number of aspects of Adelaide, music and architecture, in theory and in practice.

Do treat yourself to the next in the series (check the website - www.soundstream.org.au – but before then join both Handsworth and Soucy at another great space, the Samstag Art Museum, this Saturday from 4-6pm as they play to help usher in Crowd Theory Adelaide’- Victoria Square by Simon Terrill to that institutions collection.

The Illusionist – Seraphim Trio – Elder Hall – 5 May

What better way to spend an overcast Sunday afternoon than with the Seraphim Trio. In their second concert series of 2013, the ensemble paid homage to the ‘magician of sounds’, Maurice Ravel.

Ravel was one of the most prominent Impressionist composers, but is perhaps best known for his arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition and the orchestral work Bolero. Described by Stravinsky as “the most perfect of Swiss watchmakers”, Ravel’s sense of detail and perfectionism is well exhibited by Seraphim’s program selection.

It is curious that Ravel’s three pieces, penned within a relatively short twenty year bracket, possess such stylistic contrast.

The mellifluousness of Jeux D’eau resolved an uncomfortable sparseness of Sonata for Violin and Cello, and then both were conquered by the virtuosic Trio in A Minor.

To a program dominated by a single composer, Benjamin Martin’s Cartoon was an unusual addition.

For the first time, Seraphim was seen in a variety of different configurations, performing first as string duo, then solo piano and finally piano trio. This provided a fascinating opportunity to observe the different capacities of each instrument and player.

Most enchanting was Anna Goldsworthy’s solo performance of Jeux D’eau. Ravel’s melody was as graceful and fluid as Goldsworthy was at the piano. A joy to watch.

ADELAIDE FRINGE 2013 – All Washed Up! – 4K

In a fantastic opening musical number displaying the evident musically trained voices, the self-proclaimed ‘bad boys of musical theatre’ make a splash into the Adelaide Fringe with an uplifting musical comedy show titled All Washed Up!

The comedy duo consists of: Andrew, a tall, happy-go-lucky and often narcissistic man, and his companion (or ‘sidekick’) John who is a more logical, straightforward and relatively shorter character. The two embark on a musically adventurous journey after being shipwrecked on a deserted island with the arguments and shenanigans that ensue between the pair.

The show has everything including the Survivor-style video segments, crabs with Jamaican accents, and the strange talking (and singing) beach ball and coconut radio.

An overuse of pun jokes was done to the brink that it becomes hilarious and adds to the shows unique charming comedy.

Assisted with only a piano player, it is no doubt that both of these men stem from a life of musical theatre training as proven through their obvious singing prowess in their fun and hilarious musical numbers which encourage audience participation.

As equally fun, entertaining and ‘puntastically’ humorous, the theatrical pair go all out in their fairly underrated musical comedy show, which definitely would have deserved a somewhat bigger audience than of those who where were there on the night.

All Washed Up finishes the Adelaide Fringe this year at the La Boheme Club. Yet it is known that it will not be the end for the bad boys of musical theatre, one can hope there will be another show in the not-so-far future.

Adelaide Fringe 2013 – Symphony of Strange – Tuxedo Cat

Gareth Hart’s latest offering, Symphony of Strange, is just that – bizarre, eccentric, and plain weird.

Set on the top floor of Tuxedo Cat, this show was alien and incredibly outlandish. Endearing themselves immediately to the audience members by providing chilli chocolate and damp washcloths to combat the 39degree night, the performers led us into a vast empty space illuminated by so many candles that I recalled the funereal scene from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo+Juliet.

It’s incredibly difficult to describe this show, which is presumably what Gareth Hart intended. As promised, the ‘symphony’ is performed entirely on random items, including shopping trolleys, dried leaves, and plastic cups. Artfully composed by Edward Willoughby, this original opus is mesmerising and spellbinding.

At times, the show dragged on – in particular the fact that there was no seating as we all followed Gareth around through the immense performance space made it easy to lose focus. Moreover, the hypnotic sounds of the symphony were such that at times it was tempting to block out Gareth completely, and therefore detracted from the experience.

This show is definitely one for fans of the experimental dance genre, but is worth it if you are looking for something completely unique.

FESTIVAL – Van Dyke Parks – Thebarton Theatre – 2.5K

Billed as a major event of the Adelaide Festival, Van Dyke Parks joined with Kimbra, Daniel Johns and the Adelaide Art Orchestra in a retrospective performance of his career and works.

It’s clear why Parks is one of the most successful composers of his era. There’s a catchiness, and a mesmerising ebb and flow to his work. His compositions possess a typically American nostalgia and patriotism, and also several fleeting but humorous references to other well known tunes.

Harsh, nasal and twangy; it’s hard to say that Parks was enjoyable to listen to. The lyrics and compositional content were the main stars, and far outweighed the quality of singing.

Van Dyke Parks confessed that Kimbra and Daniel Johns were main draw cards; the gateway to a generation unfamiliar with his work. There was something a little unfair about how minimally the two popular artists were featured. Undoubtedly, many of the young attendees left unsatisfied.

The Thebarton Theatre proved to be an incapable host. Besides the inadequacies of the front of house staff and the debacle over GA seating, the sound design was of such poor quality that the fine Adelaide Art Orchestra was a muddy mess, and the vocalists were indistinguishable. Perhaps ‘Adelaide’s favourite concert venue’ should remain a site for comedians and the booming bass of contemporary performances.

Van Dyke Parks with Special Guests certainly attracted a full house, but fell short of the audience’s expectations.

FESTIVAL – 2001 A Space Odyssey – 3K or 5K

The Adelaide Festival of Arts is noted for its one landmark musical event – last year Morricone, previously Mahler and the 1000 voice choir and so on – and this year it is an orchestration of the Stanley Kubrick classic – ‘2001 – A Space Odyssey.’

To be frank, one could not say there was all that much challenge involved in the music – iconic pieces from two Strausses (Johann and Richard) played over and over – and not that much of it for a three hour production, though other choral works probably presented all involved with more meat. But the show as a whole was much more substantial.

Being in a room with 2000 others with what seemed the full Adelaide Symphony and Adelaide Chamber Singers crammed onto the stage below the screen just seemed to add an appropriate claustrophobic effect that Kubrick’s spatial space settings tried to deny. The kaleidoscope as Dave plunges beyond Jupiter was not only spellbinding in such circumstances but a good indication that you don’t zillions spent on special effects to move an audience.

So, trying to rate this show provides a conundrum. As a musical concert, it was a bit ho-hum – 3Ks but as an event; those who were there or who get along tonight will find they will be remembering it long after the Festival circus has left town – somehow it was very compelling – on this score a 5K rating applies.

FRINGE – Sister Mary Lucy – La Boheme – 4K

After a successful season at the 2012 Cabaret Fringe Festival, it’s unsurprising that Lucy Russell returns with her show Sister Mary Lucy.

With an onstage shrine and a well selected jukebox of songs, Russell confesses that her one desire is to become a nun. The tale is genuinely hilarious.

Unlike many emerging cabaret performers, Russell is at ease upon the stage and does not forget narrative direction. The show is casual but sleekly rehearsed.

The straight-face nonchalant humour is a delight, as is Russell’s singing ability. While some gags fell flat, there was plenty to compensate. To much delight, Russell persuades members of the audience to join in with a liturgical dance routine to Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer’. A definite highlight.

Lucy Russell is a local talent to keep an eye on.

FRINGE 2013 – The Saints of British Rock – 3.5K

It is doubtful that any production will rival the film, Spinal Tap, as the greatest rock’n’roll spoof of all time but the Saints of British Rock provide great fun in having a go on the theatre stage.

When we join them, the band has split from its hey days of the 1960s but the memories and flash backs run thick and fast due not only to their longings of the past but more than copious quantities of drugs, comprised in part by their ‘rock’n’roll crystals’.

The two main band members are Rocco Hercules Somershire, a red haired, shirtless, delusional mad man and Jib Frombroffits, a Mr Bendy legs singer who possesses a permanent cockney sneer.

Done as a mockumentary, thanks to a ‘live’ broadcast by BB7 on their ‘What is they thinking?’ show, these two space cadets and three other accompanying musos relive the glory days complete with numerous transcendings of time and space that include meeting up with Merlin at Stone Henge before Rocco knocks off King Arthur’s wife. The original songs, which include the occasional riff you will recognise, hardly flatter the humble rock lyricist in real life but the various videos of drug fuelled fantasies will fully recall the days of the Beatles and Rolling Stones and induce a strong yearning of wishing you had been there with them too.

Thanks to their intense love of the Queen and dislike of the French, the Saints of British Rock somehow get it all back together again by the end before collapsing into various stupors.

All great fun and older Fringe goers will find plenty to enjoy.
