RAW: Film – Piranha 3D – 4.5K

Schlock in Spades. Beach, Boobs, Boys and Blood. What could be better? While stuffy film critics will no doubt hate it, Piranha 3D as part midnight movie, horror, porn and thriller, is nonetheless excellent entertainment.

RAW: Adventures of Dead Jim – Bakehouse – Til 4th Sept – 4K

Those in the scene and those worried about others who may be in it would fine Dead Jim a most troubling experience – just as theatre should be. The intimate Bakehouse Theatre gives audiences a real sense of being in the living room with the characters and while only the approved Fringe length of one hour, any more would run the risk of the whole thing becoming harrowing. 4K

The Whitlams – The Gov, August 20 & 21

Sydney band The Whitlams have been on the music scene for close on two decades and their popularity remains strong. The two shows provided different ways of experiencing this great band and regardless of which performance people attended – or if they were lucky enough to go to both – they were sure to come away buzzing. 4.5K

In many ways this film is in parallel with the recently released Australian Lou however I found Boy the more successful with the characters and their reactions more believable and the setting better integrated into the story. 4K

Put simply, this is phenomenal. You couldn’t ask for more from a theme which encourages the choreographers to go beyond rhythmic movement and consider every act – whether as simple as walking and talking – a form of dance. 4K

RAW: SALA – Exhibition of Happiness – Kirsty Shadiac – Tin Cat Cafe – 4.5K

Clearly one of the most successful exhibitions at this year’s SALA is that of returned local girl, Kirsty Shadiac and her most engaging images of children sharing moments of pleasure. 4.5K
