My Stories, Your Emails – Space Theatre – 4K

The Feast Festival kicks off this Saturday, but Ursula Martinez has got in a couple of days early with her show, ‘My Stories, Your Emails’. Many people (including much of the opening night audience) would be familiar with Martinez from her appearances in a number of popular variety shows, such as La Clique. If you’re not however, never fear as all will be revealed (literally) during this piece.

It’s a fairly simple concept and the clue is in the name. Martinez begins with a collection of amusing and moving minutiae about her life and family. Including stories of her childhood neighbours, impersonations of her Spanish mother and observations about many mundane yet entertaining experiences, this is a fun and affective group of anecdotes. Audiences be warned however, it goes to some bizarre and sometimes crude places which those with a delicate disposition may not appreciate.

In the latter half of the show, Martinez’s engaging and affable storytelling talent is turned to material provided by fans from around the world; those who have felt the need to make a deeper connection with her after seeing her famous ‘Hanky Panky’ routine on YouTube. Accompanied by photos of the admiring masses, and some dreadful but hilarious accents, we get a glimpse into the scary, scary world of fandom; and Australia more than holds its own.

This show illustrates that sometimes the funniest material is that which is based in reality and also proves that Ursula Martinez is far from a one trick pony.
