Australian guitarist and composer Anthony Garcia brings a contemporary performance at this years Guitar Festival. Starting with Sounds Across Oceans, a single movement of sonic meditation inspired by Garcia’s recent tour of Japan. Continuing on with Malili Dreaming, derived from ideas and themes from Garcia’s experiences living in Singapore and Indonesia as a child. Garcia cleverly uses techniques to represent folk instruments from the regions. Finishing the first part with Excerpts from a short movie project Garcia is working on with his wife, Breathing Underwater, a pleasing soundscape which explores the relationship between breath, the transcendent and human vulnerability.
Part two is Songs from the Divine Wilderness a five moment work composed for this year’s Adelaide International Guitar Festival. The composition spans the length and breadth of the tonal worlds of the instruments it is been created for, the violin, masterly performed by Niki Vasilakis and the guitar by Garcia.
It is fascinating to see the cleverness of the artist creating music. Yet so much stronger is it to feel the music and let it take you on a journey as Garcia’s artistic sense manages to take the audience through a contemporary soundscape.
