Adelaide couldn’t ask for a more energetic and vibrant way to start the 2011 calendar than with West Side Story, hailed the greatest musical of all time by the Guardian (UK). With a 30+ cast, 18 piece orchestra and support crew this mega production has already been seen by over 250,000 in just six months according to Sue Farrelly, West Side Story’s General Manager.
This modernised tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet conceived by Jerome Robbins tells of bridging the gap of cultural divide set in the street where rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, are trying to vie for control. Sadly it is tragedy which finally unites.
A well designed set takes us down the streets of 1950’s New York where the youthful cast brings each superbly choreographed number with flick knife sharp energy alive. The stage is vividly lit, complementing the routines tempo and colourful costumes brilliantly. Josh Piterman (Tony) and Julie Goodwin (Maria) perform some fantastic solos and duets.
