United Kingdom based flautist, Michael Cox, is an international soloist and teacher whose wide-ranging career encompasses membership of global symphony and chamber orchestras, chamber and avant-garde music ensembles and teaching at the highest level.

For his recital in the Elder Hall at 7.30pm Wednesday 6 July,  Michael will be joined by acclaimed pianist Leigh Harrold and Celia Craig Principal Oboe with ASO. Celia is a former colleague of Michael’s from the BBC Symphony where she was Princ Cor Anglais. The trio will perform Trio by Madeleine Dring.

The recital will be Michael Cox’s only public performance of this Adelaide visit. Renowned  for his passion for teaching he has presented  classes in all continents including Great Britain, Portugal and Australia. In Adelaide his  flute course takes place at the Elder Conservatorium from 4 -9 July,directed by Elizabeth Koch, OAM.

The recital program will include works by Debussy, Prokofiev, Jolivet, Stanley, Boulanger and Vaughan Williams.

Currently Michael Cox is the principal flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Academy of St Martins in the Fields and in addition has recently succeeded his late teacher, Sebastian Bell, as the flautist of the London Sinfonietta. His work there and with the BBC has led to direct collaborations with many of the world’s most notable contemporary composers (Boulez, Stockhausen, Berio, Carter, Tippett, Takemitsu, Messiaen included).

His distinguished career began with study at the Zimbabwe College of Music in Harare and at the Royal College of Music in London. He won places on several young solo artists schemes before beginning a parallel orchestral career as Co-Principal flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. After which he went on to spend five years as principal flute of the London Symphony Orchestra before being offered principal flute positions in the Halle Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, London Mozart Players and Albion and Haffner Wind ensembles.

Since 1995 Michael Cox has been a visiting consultant at the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music and professor of flute at the Royal Academy of Music.

His visit to Adelaide has given students and musicians alike the opportunity to benefit from his experience and teaching.”
