Schlock in Spades. Beach, Boobs, Boys and Blood. What could be better? When Richard Dreyfus, as one of the few survivors from Jaws, cops it in a flesh eating frenzy right at the start, you know this is going to be full on. After the Jaws setting is laid out – lots of people on the beach, high season, figures of authority trying to maintain control and monsters on the loose – any pretences around carefully crafted suspense are done away with and the fun begins.
Never outside XXX films available only in the ACT have there been so many boobs, mostly enhanced, on show at a cinema near you. Not since Saving Private Ryan has there been so much blood and mayhem as the harbour scene in the midst of this.
Pirnaha is great entertainment. The 3D effects are well handled and add greatly. While the story line is not much, this movie has its clever bits with dialogue that didn’t descend into the usual patter, good guys and bad guys, girls and boys copping it in equal and rapid measure and some very funny bits.
Julie Foster as Sheriff Forester, Steven R McQueen as her son and Adam Scott as the porn film producer, Novak, are all excellent. The special effects are well done and the action scenes a thankful return to cartoonist carnage of days gone by instead of the micro-second sequences that we ordinarily have to put up with. The spitting out of Novak’s appendage at the audience by an unhappy piranha as silicon implants float by a moment to long remember.
While stuffy film critics will no doubt hate it, Piranha 3D as part midnight movie, horror, porn and thriller, is nonetheless excellent entertainment.
