FRINGE – Lawrence Mooney – Pretty Funny – 4K

By Olivia Henry

Lawrence Mooney is a familiar face to many. You may have seen him host ABC2’s Dirty Laundry Live and appear regularly on Spicks and Specks. Even with two decades of stand-up comedy under his belt, Mooney still bounces up onto the stage of the Rhino Room with enthusiasm and boyish charm. A quick glance around the audience and it is obvious that this one man show appeals to a wide age range, from university students to 60-somethings. Pretty Funny is an hour-long show that provides an uncensored outlet for Mooney, and a fun night for anyone who loves a drink and a laugh.

In the first moments of the show, Mooney grabs the attention of the audience with a mischievous grin and casual chatter. This seems to be the theme of Pretty Funny, as Mooney is gifted in the art of audience banter. His jokes are natural and unrehearsed, and he is able to involve the audience without the need to tease or insult. Mooney’s self-depreciating style of humour combined with his descriptive skills and body language leaves the audience thinking, “that is so me!”

While Mooney’s subject matter is relatable, it is certainly not for the easily offended. He covers a wide range of topics including personal hygiene, sex, relationships, politics and even disability. There are many instances in the show where the subject matter could be easily uncomfortable or offensive. However Mooney is able to read the audience well and remains respectful when approaching particularly touchy topics.

Pretty Funny is thoroughly enjoyable. A caution to those who are easily offended or uncomfortable with coarse language. As an experienced stand-up comedian, Lawrence Mooney provides an excellent show, even for those who are unfamiliar with his work. Pretty Funny is worth a visit from anyone looking for a quality stand-up show.

MUSIC – Lior and Westlake – Festival Theatre – 4.5K

5128138-3x2-340x227By Peter Maddern

There aren’t too many folk singer – orchestral composer combinations that can work as well as that between Lior, the younger Israeli-Australian and Nigel Westlake, a, if not the senior statesman of Australian classical music. Beyond their abilities, there can be no doubt that there is a synergy between these two gentlemen that transcends their backgrounds and stages of career that lifts the quality of their joint work well beyond the ordinary.

In the first half of Friday’s night performance, from row N, Lior reminds one occasionally of a young Cat Stevens, though his voice is so much more refined and sophisticated, as he takes us through those songs that have made his name over three albums and the past six years. Though strangely perhaps, the song that got the most audience reaction was My Grandfather, the self-arranged ode to his own that he first previewed at last year’s Sessions and which is yet to make it to vinyl (as it were.)

indexAfter the interval, the true test of this partnership was played out – the jointly composed work of Compassion where Lior brings a considered collection of Hebrew and Arabic poems on that theme to life with Westlake’s arrangements. It is quite a resounding success.

Thanks to an informative program, one can contemplate the translations and reflect deeply on the words, especially in the context of the sub-text of the hatreds that play out in Lior’s original homeland and its surrounds.

One singer alone before a sixty piece orchestra has its own risks but this performance was testament to the work that has gone into its formation. At times Lior’s voice dominated the players behind him, then blended, or played a subservient role but always he remained in command; his three octave range a colour of delight.

Westlake’s arrangements take the seven songs in the Compassion cycle to all points of the compositional compass, with at times distinct but not clichéd resort to Arabic and Hebrew themes, playing hard up against thunderous crescendos that seem packaged for one of his film scores. An ample cello and double bass section provided a set square configuration on stage to the active ASO timpani placed immediately below the rear curtain.

Compassion is a work that deserves its initial rave reviews when first performed last year at the Sydney Opera House. It is a concept we could all take additional instruction on while Westlake’s music delivers a wonderful feast of sensual sounds. While the CD is fine, hearing this live is quite the experience.

VISUAL ART – Ephemeral by Genevieve Brandenburg – from 19 Feb – Regal Theatre

DL Portrait Flyer Single PrintEPHEMERAL

A SOLO EXHIBITION BY GENEVIEVE BRANDENBURG

Ephemeral is the title of the upcoming solo exhibition by Adelaide-based portrait photographer Genevieve Brandenburg. Showing at the Regal Theatre, a beautiful Art Deco cinema in Kensington, throughout February and March, Ephemeral will showcase a selection of artist portraits of established, emerging, local and international artists, including the 2013 Stencil Art Prize ‘World’ Category winner David Soukup of Chicago; seasoned street artist Vans the Omega; emerging actor Alex Williams who played Julian Assange in ‘Underground: The Julian Assange Story’; and Melbourne-based illustration/street art duo Creature Creature.

Brandenburg’s method of portraiture draws on a personally crafted and unique interview process. During a private session with each subject, Brandenburg uncovers important aspects of the artist’s career, their personal story, their earliest memories and their most significant artistic moments. She then skilfully culminates the potent feelings discovered in the interview into a single black-and-white film portrait.

Brandenburg’s artist portraits capture the fleeting feelings and ephemeral memories of the artist’s career and preserve them in a pure, stark portrait that lasts long after the moment has subsided. These portraits give tangible form to the story of the artist and bring it to life.

Genevieve Brandenburg is an emerging artist based in Adelaide, South Australia. Primarily a portrait photographer, her passion lies with interviewing and photographing artists, musicians and creative individuals about their practices and connections to art. Genevieve also works as an illustrator and has shown at several well-known Adelaide art galleries including the SASA Gallery, Espionage Gallery and Urban Cow. Her website can be found at www.cargocollective.com/genevievebrandenburg.

The Awesome Tapes From Africa DJ set blends folkloric pop, left-field dance floor gems and hip-hop bangers, celebrating the music and musicians whose cassettes Shimkovitz has collected over the years. After 75 shows on three continents in the past couple of years, the project shows no sign of slowing down.

DJ Harvey:
Get your hips into gear as near-mythical godfather of disco and pioneer of Balearic sound DJ Harvey (USA/UK) kicks off party season at Lola’s Pergola with his legendary mix of disco/garage/house tracks. Fresh from Coachella and Rolling Stone’s ‘Top 25 DJs That Rule the Earth’ list, it’s not an A-List party if the libertine Englishman isn’t on the decks.

Recloose:
After being signed to Carl Craig’s Planet E record label based solely on his now legendary Demo on Rye Sandwich, Matthew Chicoine, aka Recloose has gone from strength to strength. The eclectic DJ’s musical roots trace back to eight years of studying music and playing jazz saxophone, later shifting his focus to the art of mixing, cutting and dicing vinyl whilst at college. The Detroit native moved to New Zealand in 2001 and since then has released a number of ambitious albums on the labels Rush Hour and Delusions of Grandeur.

Frank Booker:
DJ and producer Frank Booker emerged in 2009 to be signed immediately to boutique London record label, Untracked Recordings. Since then he has risen to popularity worldwide. As a DJ, Frank’s music spans a wide array of quality dance music: from deepest disco, to 80’s boogie and quality modern house, as well as some super special re-edits all put together with a focus firmly on the dancers. Booker also co-hosts the highly acclaimed New Zealand’s Hit It & Quit It radio show alongside Recloose.

Joe Claussell:
Joaquin “Joe” Claussell has long been one of New York City’s busiest dance figures, thanks to his work in all areas of the house community: as a highly respected DJ, producer, remixer, label-head (Spiritual Life Music and Ibadan), and record-shop owner (Dance Tracks). A veteran of the disco era, Claussell’s style is a vibrant and eclectic mix including acoustic instruments and rich percussion patterns.

Moritz von Oswald:
Moritz von Oswald is one of the most influential figures in modern electronic music, known for helping define minimal and dub techno. Since the late eighties, von Oswald has explored and defined his own personal style of minimal techno, co-founded record labels Basic Channel and Maurizio, and been an inspiration for many artists, including Richie Hawtin, Thomas Brinkmann, and Robert Henke (aka Monolake). His most recent releases are with the Moritz von Oswald Trio, featuring Tony Allen, with Emptyset and Gardland, which will play Saturday night’s Unsound set at the Adelaide Festival in the Queen’s Theatre.

Slow Magic:
Slow Magic is a post-rocktronica artist whose biography reads only ‘your imaginary best friend’. Since his inception, he has maintained an air of mystery not releasing much more that his music online and wearing a disguise onstage. The enigmatic masked artist brings dreamy electronic soundscapes together with on-stage drums, weaving pure enchantment through the audience and casting hypnotic, hip-swinging spells.

Total Eclipse:
Brooklyn’s party starter DJ Total Eclipse is one of the most diverse and talented turntablists.

FILM – 9:16 FILM FESTIVAL 2014

9:16 FILM FESTIVAL 2014

9-16Film Buff Central and supporting partners Renewal SA and the City of Port Adelaide Enfield are proud to present 9:16 Film Festival 2014.

This February will see Port Adelaide host a string of exclusive screenings and public installations of avant-garde, short films – all of which have been shot in the 9:16 ratio, portrait format.

Brought to you in conjunction with its sister event St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival, 9:16 is set to showcase the fine works of 7 South Australian filmmakers. The installations will take place in various locations of the Port including Hart’s Mill for Laneway Festival itself.

The films touch on looking at the world in a different way, using the tall 9:16 frame to create new filmic experiences. This ranges from documentary, drama, animation and experimental films. Prepare to be surprised! It is the aspect ratio of our time, its what people shoot on their phones but we have commissioned work to be shot professionally using the upright frame as a conscious artistic choice

Director, Mike Retter, of local business Film Buff Central, is the creative eye behind the festival. Film Buff’s opening in January of 2013 through Renew Adelaide, saw Retter intergrate his passion for film with his firm belief in Port Adelaide’s arts culture and potential – 9:16 is a lovechild of the two.

“The 9:16 format is as impacting as traditional cinemascope or widescreen, it’s just flipped for a new perspective… it makes giants out of things” – Retter

The premiere for the festival will take place from 8pm on February 6, at Red Lime Shack on Vincent Street. This free event launches 9:16 before it takes to the Vitals Stage at Laneway Festival the next evening. Adelaide audiences will witness a one-off Laneway experience as the films are muted, looped and projected alongside live music.

Those that miss out on the screenings can experience new moving image work at the Forge Creative Warehouse from February 6 – 13.

FESTIVAL – Lola’s Pergola

festival-posterPetaluma headlines Adelaide Festival Wine-up at Lola’s Pergola

Lola’s Pergola: Fri 28 Feb – Sat 15 Mar

With the generous backing of Petaluma Australia, Adelaide Festival’s longstanding wine partner, a collection of wine from local small scale winemakers will be available at Lola’s Pergola.

Andrew Hardy, Petaluma’s senior winemaker said, “We have been really intrigued by the concept behind Lola’s Pergola and we wanted to support the idea of celebrating a whole range of wine from the area. Petaluma is part of a wider community of winemakers in South Australia; we all share the same passion, to create great wine and the festival is a fantastic excuse to share a bottle wine.”

An eclectic blend of winemakers has been selected to showcase some of South Australia’s wine regions. The winemakers include Alpha Box and Dice, Brash Higgins, BK Wines, Frederick Stevenson, Friend Experiment, Jauma, Lucy Margaux, Ochota Barrels, Ruggabellus and Shobbrook Wines. Petaluma are getting in on the action too, providing a first time opportunity for the public to taste their own varieties of small batch PPC range which are based on further investigating terroir and winemaking, challenging current winemaking practise to learn, experience and improve.

Over three weekends, festival goers will have a chance to make a ‘Lola’s Vintage’ under the direction of winemaker Justin Lane who will employ an ancient Babylonian method of creating wine. The first weekend involves sorting the grapes, the second basket pressing them and then on the final weekend there will be a tasting of the results. The process will be as much a performance as a vintage.

Petaluama and Ochota Barrels will both launch new vintages at the club. Petaluma will provide festival goers the first opportunity to try the 2001 Croser Late Disgorged (Zero Dosage) Piccadilly Valley. Ochota will release the much-anticipated Sense of Compression collaboration between Adelaide-born Tarras Ochota and legendary rock star Maynard James Keenan of Tool/Puscifer/Perfect Circle.

Lola’s Pergola is the latest in the long tradition of unique Adelaide Festival designed clubs. DJ Sets will begin from 9pm and finish late each Thursday to Sunday night (Friday 28 February – Saturday 15 March).

Other iconic South Australian producers featured within Lola’s are Aussie Cider, Coopers and CIBO Espresso.

(No title)

image001Artistic Director Slava Grigoryan today announced three diverse and exciting new shows for this year’s Adelaide International Guitar Festival (AIGF) from July 17-20, 2014, presented by Adelaide Festival Centre.

From young classical guitarists just making their mark, through to acclaimed masters of the genre, all generations of artists are covered in these three spectacular performances.

Outstanding local classical guitarist Andrey Lebedev will take to the stage in an amazing double bill with the talented Sydney Guitar Trio.

Born in Moscow and raised in Adelaide, Lebedev was the winner of the Festival’s 2012 Adelaide International Classical Guitar Competition and returns home for this very special recital performance.  Now studying in London at the Royal Academy of Music on the Julian Bream Trust scholarship, this young man is swiftly gaining an international reputation as one of the rising stars of classical guitar.

The Sydney Guitar Trio, featuring Raffaele Agostino, Janet Agostino and Richard Charlton, joins forces with actor and musician, Rory O’Donoghue to present a program of storytelling and music in the Dunstan Playhouse on Friday, 18 July. The performance will cover everything from Alice in Wonderland to Dante’s Inferno with a dash of Banjo Paterson and Spike Milligan. This unique performance blends the power of the spoken word with music in a refreshing and entertaining way.

An extraordinary Festival premiere sees one of France’s favourite sons of the classical guitar Judicaël Perroy on a standout double bill with acclaimed composer and performer Máximo Pujol in the Dunstan Playhouse on Thursday 17 July.

The evening begins with Perroy, who is known for his mastery of instrumental colour and the compelling intensity of his performance. He has won multiple international awards and is in steady demand as a recitalist and a teacher. This concert marks his Australian debut.

Completing the double bill, Máximo Pujol brings his tango trio direct from Buenos Aires to Australia for the first time. Having honed his skills playing milongas and tangos in the clubs of his home town, his vibrant and melodically rich music is founded on these styles, and makes full use of the expressive powers of the guitar in dialogue with stellar bandoneon player Eleonora Ferreyra and double bass player Daniel Falasca.

In what promises to be a major gala event of the Festival, one of our finest musical exports the Australian String Quartet (ASQ) will be joined on the Festival Theatre stage by three very special guests on Saturday 19 July.

Firstly, acclaimed Spanish guitarist Pepe Romero will accompany the ASQ, then AIGF Artistic Director Slava Grigoryan will join the quartet on stage in his only performance of the Festival, and finally Argentina’s contemporary tango virtuosos, the Máximo Pujol Trio, will accompany the ASQ to complete this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Magnificent works for guitar and strings will feature, including Boccherini’s beloved Quintetto No. 4  Fandango, Australian Shaun Rigney’s The Garden of Forking Paths,  inspired by Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges, and Pujol’s own enchantingly romantic suite for strings and tango trio, Luminosa de Buenos Aires.

This exclusive gala event will open with a dynamic performance by Brisbane’s acclaimed Aurora Guitar Ensemble, directed by Paul Svoboda.

Heading up his third Festival, Artistic Director Slava Grigoryan said today’s classical announcement cements the festival as one of the most highly regarded on the international circuit.

“We are thrilled to have classical artists of this calibre playing at the Adelaide International Guitar Festival for 2014.”

“We’re celebrating all generations of guitar players in this amazing lineup. From young bloods like Andrey Lebedev and the Aurora Guitar Ensemble, to the more established Judicaël Perroy and of course the acclaimed masters such as Pepe Romero and Máximo Pujol.”

“Even though the formula may seem similar, the colour of each Festival changes vastly as audiences get to hear a wider and more varied mix of new and established artists.”

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO Douglas Gautier said the Adelaide International Guitar Festival remained a cornerstone of the Centre’s major festival offerings for the year ahead.

“Consistently presenting an exceptional program of local and international artists, Adelaide International Guitar Festival continues to gain international recognition and acclaim.”

“One of four major festivals presented by Adelaide Festival Centre, Adelaide International Guitar Festival offers a unique opportunity to shine the international arts and culture spotlight on South Australia.

“Slava Grigoryan has curated a first class selection of guitarists from around the world, covering a range of genres, and we look forward to announcing the rest of his lineup in April.”

Finalists in the Festival’s International Classic Guitar Competition were also announced today, representing all corners of the globe.

The international contenders are Anton Baranov from the Russian Federation, Ekachai Jearakul from Thailand, Brendan Evans from the USA and Mihailescu Bogdan from Romania.

Back in Australia, the ACT was well represented with five locals making the grade: Ariel Nurhadi, Bin Le Thanh, Callum Henshaw, Courtney Hilton and Stephanie Jones. There were two finalists from NSW, Alexander Clark and Andrew Blanch; two from Queensland, Benjamin Ellerby and Joseph Fallon; two from Victoria, Daniel Nistico and Ziggy Johnston, and one from WA, Jameson Feakes.

The full line-up of programs for this year’s Adelaide International Guitar Festival will be announced in April, including Meet the Maker, Masterclasses, Workshops and more.

CABARET – You, Me and the Bloody Sea – Feb 10 – One Nght Only – Nexus

YM&BS#4You, Me and the Bloody Sea  returns for one night only

The local hit of the 2013 Adelaide Cabaret Festival, You, Me and the Bloody Sea, is back for one night only on February 10 at Nexus before setting sail to perform at the opening of the prestigious Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM) in Brisbane later in February.

You, Me and the Bloody Sea is a boisterous and heart-wrenching adventure set on a North Sea oil rig in 1975. It tells the stories of five disparate characters through the masterful song writing of Cameron Goodall and Quincy Grant. “We’ve drawn on the spirit of traditional sea shanties and Celtic influenced rock ballads to conjure up a time and place that rings true for even the most seasoned sea dog” says Grant.

You, Me and the Bloody Sea Image 5Co-composer and well known stage actor, Cameron Goodall, is currently based in Sydney where he’s playing a very different role as Zazu in Disney’s block buster musical The Lion King. “I’m loving performing in The Lion King but I’m also looking forward to singing our own songs again. The Bloody Sea is raw and intimate. It’s a lot of fun.” Goodall and Grant are joined on stage by string player Emma Luker (Fiddle Chicks), drummer David Heinrich and double bass player Harley Gray (Golonka).

You, Me and the Bloody Sea is a rip roaring show” says director Andy Packer. “The salt-crusted crew are looking forward to letting it rip with lip smacking performances in Adelaide and then at APAM, in Brisbane, to a gathering of Artistic Directors and Programmers from the world’s leading arts festivals and venues. It’s a perfect opportunity to sell the show for an international tour”.

“Five first rate musicians sing and play their guts out in a cross between a concept album and a cantata. It is immensely powerful…This show could and should go across Australia and the world…”             Ewart Shaw, Advertiser, 17 June 2013

“The work is deeply emotive in its gaiety and its sorrow, and, finally, is a memorial for a life hard lead in a world that no longer exists…”           Jane Howard, Arts Hub, June 14 2013

For the last hour or so I’ve been lost “at the bottom of the barrelling sea” and I couldn’t have been happier!…”              Kate Ceberano ‏@KateCeberano 15 June 2013

798392-bruce-mckinvenAdelaide Writers’ Week 2014 – Full Program and Souvenir Guide Released Today

Australia’s original literary festival

Over 90 international and local writers will participate in the second annual Adelaide Writers’ Week with six days of conversation and debate set to take place in the beautiful Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden.

The souvenir Adelaide Writers’ Week 2014 program is available from today from all good bookshops and participating newsagents across Adelaide for $10 or by contacting Adelaide Festival (full details below).

Among the writers not to be missed are Margaret Drabble (UK), Elizabeth Gilbert (USA), Alexander McCall Smith (UK), Marcus Chown (UK), Margaret MacMillan (CAN) and Diarmaid MacColluch (UK).

The expanded kids program promises two fun-filled days of stories, puppets, paintings and a Nylon Zoo. In the Story Tent kids will have a chance to see Asphyxia, Australia’s leading Deaf circus performer turned puppeteer; Slapstick Theatre’s Punch and Judy and a whole host of storytellers including Mem Fox and Andy Griffiths.

Ticketed sessions this year include discussions on accessing quantum physics with Marcus Chown’s What a Wonderful World, 1914, and A History of Christianity presented by one of the world’s most influential church historians Diarmaid MacCulloch. Plus for the first time, an entire day devoted to the wonderful and weird graphic novelists with Comics Can Do Anything featuring Alison Bechdel (USA), Simon Hanselmann (AUS), Mandy Ord (AUS) and more.

Of the many conversations that will take place in the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden from Saturday 1 March to Thursday 6 March, you will hear stories about love, death, marriage, the Great Barrier Reef, both World Wars, clean water, unhappy families, the working class, illegal drugs, swimming pools, NYC in the 70s, colonial Australia, gold mines, God, politics, apps and the environment.

In her third year as Adelaide Writers’ Week Director Laura Kroetsch said: “This year is all about big books and big ideas – be it in fiction, non-fiction or comics. New to the program is a day devoted to comic art and illustration: Comics Can Do Anything brings together artists who explore topics as varied as sexual politics, classic literature, immigration, family relations, and of course creatures. The evening session in Elder Hall feature some of our most acclaimed and often controversial thinkers for robust conversations about contemporary science, war’s legacies, and the power of the Church.  Back in the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden audiences will enjoy some of today’s most exciting fiction writers as 2014 is without question one of our strongest line ups of novelists to date.”

Writers discussing their debut novels will include Sydney based Fiona McFarlane, South Australia’s Hannah Kent, and D. W. Wilson (CAN). Those discussing their second novels include Rachel Kushner (USA) and 28-year-old Eleanor Catton (NZ) 2013 Man-Booker winner.

On Saturday, March 1 the Premier of South Australia, the Hon Jay Weatherill will announce the winners of all 2014 Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature including Fiction, Children’s Literature, Non-Fiction, Young Adult Fiction, John Bray Poetry and the Premier’s Award.
