RAW: Film – Sarah’s Key – 4K

‘Sarah’s Key’ highlights an important event in French history. The power of the film comes from it cutting through the sterile view one may have of the past, by showing the personal impact of this notorious event – both at the time and in the future. 4K

RAW: Film – Heartbreaker – 4K

With strong performances from the leading cast and spot-on characterisations all round, the overall feeling is one of great fun. When it comes to romantic comedies, the French could certainly teach everyone else a thing or two.

RAW: Film – Somewhere – 2.5K

Somewhere movie image Stephen Dorff

If nothing else, this film has a cool soundtrack, is the foot back in the door for Coppola and Dorff, and is the first stepping stone for Fanning. It’s an example of art-house being art-house once again, and should be appreciated as just that. 2.5K

RAW: Film – Burlesque 3.5K

‘Burlesque’ is not a life changing movie but it does provide a pleasant two hour distraction and is light-hearted holiday viewing that doesn’t require too much brain power. 3K

The acting is superb, with Tommy Lewis’ almost entirely wordless performance sending shivers down the viewer’s spine, Steve Bisley laying down the law and most impressive is Ryan Kwanten’s naive young Shane who just wants to follow the law. 4.5K

TheSocialNetworkMovieTrailer

The film does drag with little weight or substance and runs a good twenty minutes too long, but there is enough humour to lift it somewhat, and enough controversy and fiction to keep you watching. 2.5K

RAW: Film – Summer Coda – 2.5K

The opening 15 minutes of this Australian film set in Mildura looks set to take us on a fascinating journey with many characters established and a mesh of plots and counter plots to savour in their subsequent development. Sadly, Richard Gray’s screen play and direction peters out from there in the orange groves along the Murray River. 2.5K

Manhattan Short Film festival

This was an excellent evening’s entertainment at the Mercury, showcasing what seems to be an ever burgeoning short film world or one in which such films get increasing opportunities to be aired. Winner from Italy. 3.5K
