RAW: Film – Harry Brown – 4K

It’s so refreshing to see a veteran star embrace their age.

Michael Caine is admirable in the role of ex-serviceman Harry Brown, a senior citizen living in The Estate: a haven for thugs and drugs. After his wife passes away, and close friend Leonard Attwell is murdered, Harry takes matters into his own hands when he realises the police, including D.I. Alice Frampton (Emily Mortimer) and D.S. Terry Hicock (Charlie Creed-Miles), are unable to help…

Harry Brown is perceived to be a ‘vigilante pensioner’, however there is more to the character. Perhaps the catalyst for Harry’s actions is the death of his friend, but it is clear that he is acting in the best interests of the community living in The Estate.

Frampton: It’s not Northern Ireland Harry.
Harry Brown: No it’s not. Those people were fighting for something; for a cause. To them out there, this is just entertainment.

Fresh director Daniel Barber (The Tonto Woman) paints a realistic picture of The Estate, gritty and unsafe. Hand-held cameras are used to great effect at the start of the film, where instability and unpredictability are quickly established as the norm. Combined with a well-written screenplay by Gary Young, this film engages throughout.

Caine is supported by a great UK cast, including a meek Emily Mortimer, a paranoid David Bradley and an aggressive Ben Drew.

You’ll never underestimate an old man again…

RAW: Pomona Road @ Space Theatre

This innovative production combines elements of contemporary dance, spoken word and visual projections to portray a family enduring tough times after surviving Ash Wednesday.

Adelaide choreographer Katrina Lazaroff (pictured below) has put together a truly touching show. This is actually the third installment of Pomona Road, finally uniting a family of five. They are established as warring siblings and loving parents through a varied soundtrack (voiceovers and songs) and choreography that connects with the average person. As the plot unfolds, unresolved tensions seem to rise to the surface, as do questions relating to child abuse and alcoholism.

Martial arts have also influenced this piece – and are particularly useful when expressing frustration, anger and violence.

Nic Mollison also should be applauded for creating realistic projections of the forest, the bush and the city. The main set piece constructed by Richard Seidel is unexpectedly versatile.

The 60 minute production appeals to more than the typical fan of dance as a genre – this emerging style of ‘documentary dance’ engages anyone with an appreciation for the arts.

Pomona Road is only running until 24th April 2010 at Space Theatre – see it while you still can!

RAW: Kath On A Hot Tin Roof @ The Austral

Mature comedian Kathryn Bendall is Kath On A Hot Tin Roof: a hypochondriac who tells us her life story. She has some interesting insights on the Australian Labor Party, Gen Y, and her children ‘Meatloaf’, ‘Mashed Potatoes’ and ‘Beans’.

Her occasional references to things like thalidomide, which are not universally recognised by Gen Y or X’s for that matter, are irrelevantly funny. However, Kath’s full life (including three marriages) provide more than enough engaging material for most generations.

Check out this wannabe trophy wife – who looks more like a gay icon!

RAW: Burlesque Ball @ Adelaide Town Hall

While Dita Von Teese, Has one hell of a pout,

My lips, while modest, Are kissable, no doubt!

And yes, the green fairy, Has a great pair of wings,

But, although I can’t fly, I can do other things!

And I know Lady Marmalade can dance,

And striptease and much more,

If I ever went to the Moulin Rouge,

I’m sure I too could work its floor!

And, no, I’m no fire breather, No contortionist, I’m sorry,

But I know a trick or two, I assure you, don’t worry!

So as you can see, At the Burlesque Ball I belong,

I’ve no doubt that the Ball will beat the hell out of this song!

Kicking On at the Burlesque Ball

Kelly was not wrong – the Burlesque Ball was kicking! Most attendees really got into the spirit of things, dressing up (or down, as the case may be) in some spectacular outfits! (For more pics, click here)

New York headliner Julie Atlas Muz performed her famous balloon trick, while MC Ophelia Bitz kept the crowds stirred right up!

Sure, most of the acts could be boiled down to an extended exotic ‘legitimate’ striptease, but it was so much more… The grandeur of the Adelaide Town Hall, the perfect venue for the Ball, must of course be preserved -presumably, that’s why there was no fire nor silks.

So much more than a show, it’s the atmosphere that will draw Kryztoff back…

RAW: Tripod Vs The Dragon (feat. Elana Stone) @ Royalty Theatre

Tripod take on Elana Stone in an on-stage version of Dungeons & Dragons, where their imaginations are brought to life through song, occasionally dance, and shadows. It’s clear that Scod is taking point on this one… after all, he did admit to being a D&D player in the interview below…

The lovely Elana Stone is an absolute stand out – she really has taken comedy into her stride and her vocals are beautiful as ever. She’ll be playing with her band at one of the Adelaide Festival Grab Bags too… keep a lookout! icon wink RAW: Tripod Vs The Dragon (feat. Elana Stone) @ Royalty Theatre She also keeps the fellas on their toes! It’s a ton of fun, especially if you haven’t seen Tripod live before. Die-hard fans should enjoy the show, but may prefer their previous outings.

RAW: The Basie/Sinatra Show @ The Prom

The Mike Stewart Big Band are as grand as they ever have been.

Seriously tight, the 17 piece-band plays some jazz classics from the Count Basie songbook. They are then joined by the swinging Luke Thompson, whose rehearsed vocals are simply Sinatra. Personal highlights included I Got The World On A String, Come Fly With Me and crowd sing-a-long I Did It My Way.

For many it was a nostalgic trip down memory lane at The Promethean, but for a few it was about discovering these golden oldie jazz tracks.

Not as cheesy as expected, but still a fantastic set.

RAW: Lady Carol @ Bosco Theatre, GoUD

The Lady with step in her voice, Lady Carol presented a phenomenal performance.

Last year, we were introduced to her unique yodelling vocals during the nightly variety show, A Company of Strangers. It’s such a treat to see Lady Carol in all her finery for a full hour solo show… well, almost. Her ukelele is never far from her lap, and she ‘decorates’ the stage with a decent drum kit and electronic keys. The manly musicians are enthusiastic, but naturally Lady Carol retains the spotlight.

Lady Carol is also appears comfortable on stage: she engages the crowd well with her self-deprecating wit and amusing anecdotes.

A must-see show, see Lady Carol belt out her favourites, including Radiohead’s Creep, as well as a few originals.

RAW: Kelly Gertig’s Pop Art Exhibition

Kelly Gertig’s artworks literally pop out of the bland walls at The Caledonian in North Adelaide.

Sure the style is simple, but Kelly has created great examples of Pop Art. Using bold and bright colours as well as the the recurring motifs of her character ‘Redhead’ and nude silhouettes, this exhibition is where pop art meets art deco.

When talking about the ‘Redhead’, Kelly explains (at her opening) that she was inspired by images of women in the 1950s.

“I love all things vintage. I really wanted to portray that 1950s look with the ‘Redhead’.”

Scattered about the renovated Caledonian Hotel, it’s definitely worth seeing over a bevvy or two.

RAW: The Sapphires

The Sapphires is Australia’s theatrical answer to the American film Dreamgirls.

Set in the late 60s, four indigineous sisters, Gail, Kay, Cynthia and Julie, with powerful, soulful voices embark on a tour in Vietnam, entertaining the troops. Predictably, there are a number of love interests, references to drugs, racism and the War.

Sure the plot is thin at times, and the nods to complex issues, like racial tension, the Vietnam War, lack real substance, but that’s not what The Sapphires is all about. It’s all about fun. It’s a great crowd-pleaser.

Christine Anu, Casey Donovan, Kylie Farmer and Hollie Andrew sparkle as The Sapphires – their soulful vocals fill the Scott Theatre. Hear those fantastic vocalists sing motown classics, including Aretha’s R-E-S-P-E-C-T and I Heard It Through The Grapevine and much, much more.

As part of the Adelaide Festival of Arts, shimmy on down to the Scott Theatre.
