Theatre: Potted Potter – Her Majesty’s until Nov 17th – 2.5K

This is a fun, family friendly show but lacks any real ingenuity. Those in the older age group of the audience were likely left somewhat disappointed by the lack of wit involved in, and predictability of, the majority of the jokes. The under 12s lapped them up. 2.5K

Theatre – Pornography – STCSA – Space Theatre – 3.5K

Despite the quality of each aspect of the show, there seemed to be an element missing to make it really powerful. For a show that is about highlighting and fighting the disconnection in today’s society, it too failed to stir up particularly strong emotions of any kind. 3.5K

Theatre – Into the Woods – Northern Light Theatre Company – Until October 27th

A superb ensemble of actors has been gathered by director Karen Sheldon, and under her guidance they meet the demands of the vocals admirably, and also shine in their comedic abilities. This is a long show, pushing three hours, but in the hands of this professional cast and crew, the pace remains constant, the performances are engaging and the time flies.

THEATRE: Top Girls – State Theatre Company of SA – Dunstan Playhouse – 3K

While there are several things to like about this production – the opportunity to see seven highly talented women on stage at once being one – there are also too many flaws to allow it to be entirely enjoyable. 3K

THEATRE: The Gondoliers – G&S Society of SA – Arts Theatre

Those more acquainted with the shows of Gilbert and Sullivan and the productions of the G&S Society will no doubt love the cheeky humour of the cameo appearances throughout and enjoy the chance to reminisce. While the production didn’t quite reach the heights it may have, it was still a very enjoyable show and a wonderful way to celebrate the anniversary of this beloved member of the local musical theatre scene.

THEATRE: Pinocchio – Windmill & STCSA – Dunstan Playhouse – 3.5K

This is a show that will engage younger audiences, particularly families, and is a great opportunity to get children seeing theatre (especially in the school holidays). Whether it will be a hit with the older crowds though is questionable. While still enjoyable from an adult perspective, it doesn’t quite tick all the boxes you might hope. 3.5K

CABARET: Tripod – Men of Substance – Banquet Room – 4K

Adult is not usually one of the words you’d choose to use to describe Tripod. However, that’s what their latest show, Men of Substance, centres on – what awaits when you leave your youth behind and become “an adult”. Of course, getting older doesn’t necessarily mean that you get more mature, as illustrated perfectly by …

CABARET: Tex Perkins & the Dark Horses – Space Theatre – 4K

As a band, the group offered everything you could want from a set: great songs, played well and with pizzazz. However, the place of this show in the Cabaret Festival is somewhat confusing. 4K

CABARET: Tim Freedman – Dunstan Playhouse – 4.5K

Freedman’s songs may not get played on Triple J anymore but he obviously still has a very strong fan base – one which crosses several generations and is happy to see him play in a variety of show styles. This was a chance to hear his fine music in a more refined setting and he provided a great evening of entertainment. 4.5K

CABARET – The Suitcase Royale: The Ballad of Backbone Joe – Space Theatre – 4K

This is guaranteed to be different to anything else on offer during the Cabaret Festival – and kudos should go to the programmers for having the vision to include it in the line-up. The Suitcase Royale once again present an enchanting evening of eccentric entertainment. 4K
