FRINGE 2013: Theatre – 3 Tales of Woe – Ayers House – 2K

Shadow puppetry is not often presented nowadays and it’s nice that there are still young people out there who are taking the time to keep it going as an art form. Amber Forbes and her assistant present three tales via this medium. Each of the stories is pre-recorded with backing music added to heighten the …

FRINGE 2013: Music – Suicide Songs for the Ukulele – Grace Emily Hotel – 4K

High above a rather cramped looking stage at the Grace Emily, a ukulele hangs in a noose. It’s an oddly beautiful sight and that feeling reflects the content of the show to come. The clue is in the title really: this is an evening of tunes that are about suicide – or aren’t actually about …

FRINGE 2013: Theatre – Raton Laveur – Bakehouse Theatre – 4K

Rodents in the roof can drive the calmest person to distraction. Lily (Wendy Bos) comes home in response to a desperate phone call from Phil (Ben Noble), who appears to have developed a rather unhealthy obsession with racoons, and soon realises that something has gone badly wrong. Together, they have to try to determine a …

FRINGE 2013: Theatre – Choir Girl – Tuxedo Cat – 4.5K

Susan has a lovely alto voice and a life consisting almost entirely of the obsession of finding a choir to which she can contribute both her talent and her experience. FRINGE: Theatre – Breaker – Holden Street Theatres, the Arch – 4K

In a school room on a small island, two strangers meet. Dan (Finn den Hertog) has come to the remote community in search of the town of his grannie’s tales, while Sunna (Hannah Donaldson) is the local teacher – a born and bred islander, who doesn’t take kindly to interfering city boys. Over the course …

Theatre: Potted Potter – Her Majesty’s until Nov 17th – 2.5K

This is a fun, family friendly show but lacks any real ingenuity. Those in the older age group of the audience were likely left somewhat disappointed by the lack of wit involved in, and predictability of, the majority of the jokes. The under 12s lapped them up. 2.5K

Theatre – Pornography – STCSA – Space Theatre – 3.5K

Despite the quality of each aspect of the show, there seemed to be an element missing to make it really powerful. For a show that is about highlighting and fighting the disconnection in today’s society, it too failed to stir up particularly strong emotions of any kind. 3.5K

THEATRE: Top Girls – State Theatre Company of SA – Dunstan Playhouse – 3K

While there are several things to like about this production – the opportunity to see seven highly talented women on stage at once being one – there are also too many flaws to allow it to be entirely enjoyable. 3K

THEATRE: The Gondoliers – G&S Society of SA – Arts Theatre

Those more acquainted with the shows of Gilbert and Sullivan and the productions of the G&S Society will no doubt love the cheeky humour of the cameo appearances throughout and enjoy the chance to reminisce. While the production didn’t quite reach the heights it may have, it was still a very enjoyable show and a wonderful way to celebrate the anniversary of this beloved member of the local musical theatre scene.
